Born in London in 1803, Henry Chapman was a newspaper proprietor in Canada before being admitted to the bar in London in 1840. In the same year he published the first issue of 'The New Zealand Journal'. In 1843 he was appointed judge for southern New Zealand, and sailed to Wellington with his family in 1843. Chapman spent some time in Australia - as colonial secretary in Van Dieman's Land then as a lawyer in Melbourne, returning to Dunedin in New Zealand in 1864. He retired in 1875 when he began exhibiting paintings with the Otago Art Society 1878-1880.
