Born in 1891, Tom Gulliver originally trained as an engineer before he developed an interest in art. He was a founding member of the Quoin Club, an association of Auckland printmakers, an association of amateur printmakers which flourished in Auckland between 1916 and 1926. Best known for his woodcuts, such was his knowledge of the medium that he was appointed Honorary Curator of Prints and Drawings at the Auckland Art Gallery.
