Jeannie Pitjara Petyarre was an Indigenous Australian artist from the Anmatyerre language group, located in the Central Desert region of Australia. She was born in the early 1950s in the Utopia region of the Northern Territory. Petyarre began painting in the early 1980s, alongside several other women from the Utopia region who were encouraged by the Batik project. Her art often features intricate dotting techniques and vibrant colors that reflect the natural environment and cultural traditions of the Anmatyerre people. Throughout her career, Petyarre's art was exhibited widely in Australia and internationally. Her work was featured in several major exhibitions, including the National Gallery of Australia, the Art Gallery of New South Wales, and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney. One of Petyarre's most famous works is a painting titled "Awelye", which depicts the traditional women's ceremony of body painting. The painting is held in the collection of the National Gallery of Victoria. In addition to her artistic career, Petyarre was also involved in community development programs and education initiatives, working to promote the preservation and continuation of Anmatyerre culture and traditions.
