Born in Western Australia in 1915, Durack studied at the London Polytechnic. She spent several years living on the Ivanhoe and Argyle cattle stations and much of her work reflects life in the north-west of Australia. Durack was awarded an OBE for her services to the arts in 1966, and a CMG for services to art and literature in 1982.
Elizabeth Durack is one of the most prolific of the artists listed in our database, with the number of works offered for sale by auction since 1973 of 1,412, of which 1,196 (85%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $34,500 for Piccaninny Story Time Manuscript C.1942 (The Story of How Life Began with the Gift Of Fire.) sold by McKenzies Auctioneers in April 2009.
