Michael Cook is of Bidjara heritage and was born in Brisbane in 1968 and adopted into a non-indigenous family as a baby. He worked as a commercial photographer for 25 years and then using his photographic skills, became a full time photo-media artist. He creates works that offer striking alternative realities for life in Australia that do not match colonial narratives. His first solo exhibition was in 2010 in Brisbane, and since then has held exhibitions in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Canberra and London. Recent major exhibitions at public galleries include at the Museum of Photographic Arts, San Diego, the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne, the Musee d’ethnographie de Geneve, Switzerland and the National Gallery of Singapore. In 2015 his work was exhibited in the Palazzo Mora during the 56th Venice Biennale.
