Howard Scott was born in Hong Kong in 1921 where he lived until 1927 when he returned home to England with his parents. His earlier painting studies were interrupted by World War II where he became a fighter pilot in the Fleet Air Arm, serving in the Indian and Pacific Ocean. It was during these years that he visited Australia for the first time and discovered the uniquel quality of the Australian light. He returned to England after the war and studied under the tutorage of a Royal Academician in the artists' haven of Chelsea. This experience was to have a major impact on the rest of his successful career. Part of his training involved a technique where the artist dispenses with the paint brush in favour of the palette knife. The paint brush is only used for the signature when the painting is finished, leading to him becoming known as a traditional painter of Australian scenes in oil applied by palette knife, Scott married in 1952 and brought his wife, Noel and their two boys to Australia in 1971.
