Born in Auckland in 1941, Sylvia Siddell is mostly a self-taught artist. In 1960 she married artist Peter Siddell. Sylvia Siddell works in oil, acrylic pencil and conte and is an etcher. She exhibited regularly throughout New Zealand from 1975 onwards and her work is held in private and public collections in New Zealand and internationally. She won a Queen Elizabeth Arts Council Award in 1987. She was appointed as an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit (ONZM) in the Queen's Birthday Honours of 2002, in recognition of her services to painting.
The total number of works by Sylvia Siddell offered for sale by auction since 1989 is 229, of which 176 (77%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $5,373 for The Birds, the Bat and The Beasts Aesop Fables sold by International Art Centre in May 2015. This year 17 works have been offered for sale. Works by Sylvia Siddell are held by the Museum Of New Zealand, Auckland Art Gallery and a further two major public national galleries (see list below).
