Born in England in 1872, George Butler arrived in Wellington, New Zealand in 1881. He studied under James Nairn from 1890, and in 1898 spent two years in Europe studying in London, Paris and Antwerp. He exhibited in Wellington and Dunedin until 1908 when he returned to England and exhibited with the Royal Academy. During World War I he was appointed Official War Artist with the New Zealand troops. In 1905 he returned to England and worked as a teacher in Bristol. He was elected to the Royal West of England Academy in 1912, and exhibited at the Royal Academy of Arts, the Royal Scottish Academy, the Royal Academy and the annual exhibition at the Société des Artistes Français in Paris.
