Born in Woodbury, New Zealand in 1885, Esther Barker studied in Christchurch and in 1911 went to England for further studies. She travelled through Europe and was in Brittany when war broke out in 1914. For the next four years she drove lorries and worked as a VAD. On her return to New Zealand in 1919, she married and lived on a farm in the Mackenzie country. Known mainly for her watercolours and gouaches of the Mackenzie country, Hope exhibited her work at the Royal Academy and the Paris Salon.
