Born in Lower Hutt, New Zealand in 1887, Flora Scales went to England to study animal painting in 1908. She returned to New Zealand in 1912 after exhibiting at the Royal Academy. She left again for Europe after World War I, studying in Paris and Munich, and apart from a short trip to New Zealand in 1934, remained in Europe and England until 1972. She painted continually, but rarely exhibited. Her work was brought to public notice in 1975 during a retrospective exhibition in Auckland.
The earliest auction listing we have for Flora Scales is in 1995 and in total 17 works by the artist have been offered for sale, of which 16 (94%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $17,762 for A Days Work sold by International Art Centre in April 2019. No works have been offered for sale this year, and the last sale we have recorded for the artist was in 2023. Works by Flora Scales are held by the Museum Of New Zealand, Auckland Art Gallery and a further two major public national galleries (see list below).
