Born in Adelaide in 1876, Laurence Howie painted landscapes in watercolour. He studied at the South Australian School of Art and in London. After working in the War Records Office during World War I, he returned to Adelaide and became principal of the South Australian School of Arts and Crafts from 1920 to 1941. Howie died in 1963. His work is represented in the Art Gallery of South Australia and the Australian War Memorial Museum.
