About William Elijah Sheils
William Elijah Sheils was born in Melbourne on 10 September 1897. He was from a large family and was raised around the inner city Brunswick area. He was a self taught artist who benefited from the soldiers' rehabilitation program after the Second World War, spending time at the Melbourne Technical College and taking part in a students' exhibition at the Velasquez Gallery in 1947. He painted in oils and watercolours, and also drew with pen and ink. He would be inspired to paint and draw from something he had seen and then produce copious works of the subject using all mediums until he was satisfied. His watercolours inspired by his time in Egypt during the Second World War are beautiful as are his oils inspired by the Australian bush. He lived a long and productive life painting, teaching and exhibiting from his base in North Balwyn.
