Born in Christchurch in 1905, Ivy Field attended the Canterbury School of Art as a student, became a student teacher and then a full time staff member, staying for 39 years. She was also a Council Member of the Canterbury Society of Arts from 1949 to 1966 and a member of the Advisory Committee of the Robert McDougall Art Gallery. She was known for her Canterbury based landscapes and portraits. Field died in 1976 and in 1977, a retrospective exhibition of Fife's work was held at the Robert McDougall Gallery (now the Christchurch Art Gallery).
