Born on the Isle of Wight in 1890, Herbert Cole came to New Zealand as a child. He later studied at the Slade School in London and became known as a mural painter and surgical artist, illustrating medical text books. He was employed at the Queen's Hospital, Sidcup during the First World War, where he painted a series of watercolours of disfigured soldiers undergoing treatment. These are housed at the Royal College of Surgeons, London and in the Hocken Library, Dunedin. Cole also painted a number of New Zealand landscapes, which he signed 'Rix Carlton'. Cole died in 1962. See entry under Rix Carlton.
