Born in England in 1878, Lewis Evans contracted polio at the age of 9 and was confined to a wheelchair. With his family he moved to New Zealand aged 16 and settled in Napier in 1894, where he lived for the rest of his life. He is best known as a landscape watercolourist. A collection of his work is held by Hawkes Bay Museum.
