Savanhdary Vongpoothorn was born in Laos, 1971, came to Australia as a child in 1979, settling in Sydney. She completed a Bachelor of Visual Arts at the University of Western Sydney and a Masters of Fine Arts at University of New South Wales College of Fine Arts. Her work bridges the divide between Laotian and Australian culture, and she has worked with many media during her career including perforated canvas, bamboo, paint, acrylic and watercolour. Her first solo exhibition was in Sydney in 1995 and since then she is held 20 solo exhibitions in Sydney Melbourne and Canberra. She has also exhibited in a number of group exhibitions throughout Australia, and in The Philippines and Indonesia. Savanhdary Vongpoothorn has undertaken numerous residencies in Australia and overseas including in Scotland, Japan, Singapore, Vietnam and India. In 2006, she was commissioned to create a major work for the 15th Biennale of Sydney, and was a finalist in the 2016 Sir John Sulman Prize. In 2019 The Drill Hall Gallery, Canberra staged a survey exhibition of her work which included a work done in collaboration with Japanese poet Noriko Tanaka measuring 17 metres long and comprised of multiple panels of delicate handmade Japanese paper. She currently lives and works in Canberra.
