Born in Invercargill, New Zealand in 1887, Grace Butler (nee Cumming) studied at the Napier Art School, and from 1910-1914 at the Canterbury School of Art. She married Guy Butler in 1911 and they lived in Christchurch. Grace Butler painted the South Island mountains around Arthur's Pass. She exhibited regularly from 1916.
