John Mills was born in Strathfield NSW in 1907. He gained admission on scholarship to the Sydney Technical College (later National Art School) at the age of 13 and later attended classes at the Royal Art Society of NSW on a scholarship under the tutelage of Datillo Rubbo, Sydney Long and James R Jackson, winning a number of class prizes. He worked as a freelance artist and exhibited with the Royal Art Society as well as the NSW Society of Artists before joining Australian Consolidated Press in 1938. In 1942 he enlisted as a volunteer in the Royal Australian Naval Volunteer Reserve and became an unofficial war artist. After the war he returned to work with Australian Consolidated press until retiring in 1973. Although principally an illustrator, his watercolour landscapes were selected for the Wynne Prize on six occasions in the 1960s and he continued to paint for leisure in both oils and watercolours.
