Born in Bolton, England in 1813, Claxton studied at the Royal Academy School, London. He arrived in Australia in 1850 and hoping to set up an art school and set up an exhibition to sell his paintings, but because of indifferent success he departed for India in 1854. During his stay in Australia he executed a commission from Queen Victoria to paint a General View of the Harbour and City of Sydney. He also painted a portrait of the last Queen of the Aboriginals.
