About William Sandy
Australian Aboriginal artist William Sandy was born at Ernabella in 1944 but has been living at Papunya since 1973. He began painting in 1978, however, it was not till the early 1980s that he began painting regularly for Papunya Tula Artists. In 1985 he won the Northern Territory Art Award. His work was included in the ‘Dreamings’ show which toured the USA in 1988-9, and in a subsequent show of Papunya Tula Artists in New York. He had a solo exhibition in 1990 in Melbourne.
The total number of works by William Sandy offered for sale by auction since 1989 is 120, of which 63 (53%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $7,700 for Honey Ant Dreaming sold by Christies in May 1989. No works have been offered for sale this year, and the last sale we have recorded for the artist was in 2023. Works by William Sandy are held by the Art Gallery of South Australia.
