Born in South yYarra, Melbourne in 1890, Ethel Spowers is a modernist painter best known for her woodcuts and linocuts. She studied at the National Gallery School from 1911-17, in Melbourne and in London and Paris and held her first solo exhibition in 1920 in Melbourne and in 1921 to 1924 worked and studied in London and Paris. She further studied in London in the late 1930s and after returning to Australia continued exhibiting. She ceased practicing as an artist in in the late 1930s due to ill health and Spowers died in 1947.
