Arthur Briscoe was born Leeds, England in November 1920 and commenced a career as artist-designer in the printing and packaging trade. A watercolourist and etcher, he exhibited at the Royal Society of British Artists (RBA) Galleries, London, prior to emigrating to New Zealand in 1964. Living in Wellington he worked as a commercial artist with a printing company. Briscoe regularly at the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts of which he was an artist member. He won the first Manawatu Arts Award in 1965 and the National Bank Watercolour Award in 1976.
