About Geoffrey Richard Mainwaring
Born at Magill in South Australia in 1912, Geoffrey Mainwaring studied at the Unley School of Arts. He taught art at secondary level from 1928 to 1936. A portraitist and art teacher, Mainwaring was an official war artist in Papua New Guiinea and the Pacific Islands during World War II, and the Australian War Memorial holds hundred of his works. In 1949, he became Head of the Art School at the Ballarat School of Mines and continued painting commissioned portraits.
