Born in Manchester England in 1840, Ernest Stocks arrived in Australia in 1854. He taught during the 1860s and 1870s and exhibited in the 1875 Melbourne Intrcolonial Exhibition. A watercolourist, who favoured landscapes, he travelled widely in Victoria, NSW, Queensland, Western Australia and Tasmania, in pursuit of painting in the latter half of the last century. His work is represented in several Victorian provincial collections. He died in Drouin, Victoria in 1921. The Geelong Gallery held a restrospective of his works in 2005.
