About Ernest Decimus Stocks
Born in Manchester England in 1840, Ernest Stocks arrived in Australia in 1854. He taught during the 1860s and 1870s and exhibited in the 1875 Melbourne Intrcolonial Exhibition. A watercolourist, who favoured landscapes, he travelled widely in Victoria, NSW, Queensland, Western Australia and Tasmania, in pursuit of painting in the latter half of the last century. His work is represented in several Victorian provincial collections. He died in Drouin, Victoria in 1921. The Geelong Gallery held a restrospective of his works in 2005.
The earliest auction listing we have for Ernest Stocks is in 1969 and in total 158 works by the artist have been offered for sale, of which 93 (59%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $21,850 for Fremantle W.A. from Flagstaff Hill sold by GFL Fine Art in November 2008. This year one work has been offered for sale. Works by Ernest Stocks are held by the Art Gallery of South Australia and Geelong Gallery.
