Born in Adelaide in 1927, Daws studied engineering and architecture at the University of Adelaide, and spent two years on survey work in New Guinea before studying art at Melbourne National Art School of Art. In 1957 he was awarded the italian Travelling Scholarship and spent the next 13 years travelling, returning to live in Queensland in 1970. He first exhibited in Rome in 1959 and since then has held regular solo shows throughout Australia.
