Born in Wellington in 1888, Gwen Knight grew up in Sydney went to Europe to study art and work in 1929. She lived in Europe for the next 19 years. Her paintings were known for their pastel-like effects. Knight was the model for Frances Hodkins' Under the Pines, a watercolour, now in the National Art Gallery in Wellington. Gwen Knight returned to New Zealand in 1948 and lived in Wellington. She exhibited with the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts from 1929, the Auckland Society of Arts in 1949 and the Hays Art Competitions in 1960 and 1966.

The total number of works by Gwen Knight offered for sale by auction since 1991 is 108, of which 88 (81%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $5,363 for The Goldfish Pond sold by Dunbar Sloane in September 2019. This year one work has been offered for sale. Works by Gwen Knight are held by the Museum Of New Zealand.
