Award winning photo-journalist, Mervyn Bishop was born and grew up in Brewarrina in north-west New South Wales. He was introduced to photography by a local amateur photographer and began as a cadet photographer with the Sydney Morning Herald in 1963, the first Aboriginal photographer for the newspaper. In 1971 he won the News Photographer of the Year Award. In 1974 he started working at the Department of Aboriginal Affairs in Canberra, covering major developments in Aboriginal communities throughout Australia. In the early 1990s became a teacher in photography at tertiary level and in 1991 his solo exhibition and In Dreams: Mervyn Bishop Thirty Years of Photography 1960–1990 opened at the Australian Centre for Photography in Sydney and toured nationally.
