Born in Ormond, Victoria in 1943 Peter Stephenson studied at Tasmanian School of Art from 1971 to 1974 and at Staaliche Hochschule für Bildende Kunst, Hamburg, Germany in 1975-76. Now based in Tasmania, his figurative expressionist paintings were shown in his first solo exhibition in Canberra in 1965 and since then has contributed to numerous solo and group exhibitions mainly in Hobart, Melbourne and Brisbane.

The highest price recorded for the artist is $9,987 for White Leader, 2nd Rescue sold by Christies in May 2003.
