Born in the UK in 1822, Charles Heaphy was the son of British artist Thomas Heaphy. He studied at the Royal Academy and at 17 years of age was appointed draughtsman-artist to the New Zealand Company and sent to Wellington. He returned to England briefly in 1841 and published 'Narrative of a Residence in Various Parts of New Zealand'. He lived in Nelson from 1942 until 1848 when he was appointed draughtsman to the Survey Office in Auckland. Heaphy served as a volunteer in the Waikato Wars and was awarded the Victoria Cross. He moved to Brisbane in 1881 and died there the same year.
