Born in England in 1830, Lloyd came to Australia when his father, an Indian army officer, retired to Tasmania in 1840. Henry Lloyd studied divinity in Tasmania but was not ordained. He probably studied under Conrad Martens and was influenced by Samuel Elyard and John Skinner Prout. He sketched and painted in Tasmania until 1857. In 1858 he moved to New South Wales and later to Queensland and New Zealand. He returned to live in Tasmania in 1900.
