Born in Scotland in 1792, Mitchell was an explorer, surveyor and artist. His first commission was to produce plans for the Peninsular Wars in 1814. He arrived in Sydney in 1827 and on the death of John Oxley in 1828 he became Surveyor-General to the colony. In this capacity he travelled widely throughout New South Wales where he painted many landscapes, usually in watercolours.
