Born in Adelaide in 1891, Dorrit Black studied first at the South Australian School of Arts, then in Sydney under Julian Ashton and Elioth Gruner, and in London. She became an associate of Grace Crowley and Roland Wakelin. In 1932 she founded the Modern Art Centre in Sydney. Later, in Adelaide she joined a group of artists to form the Contemporary Art Society.
