Living in the Sydney area in the 1890s, Samuel Cocks painted landscapes and seascapes in oils and watercolours, and was also a photographer. In 1890 he was awarded the Art Students Prize at the National Art Gallery of New South Wales, and exhibited at the Society of Artists in 1895 and 1899. It is believed he later moved to Kiama, New South Wales as did his brothers George Cocks and R. Sidney Cocks, where he opened a photography studio and was working as a photographer as late as the 1920s.
