Nerli was born in Siena and emigrated to Australia in 1885. As a painter in oils, he influenced the young members of the emerging Heidelberg School, in particular Charles Conder. He spent several years travelling between New Zealand, Sydney and Melbourne before returning to Europe around 1904. He was a prolific artist in the 19 years he was in Australia and New Zealand.
