John Cotton, pastoralist and naturalist, was born at Balham Hill, Clapham Common, London in 1802 and emigrated to Australia in 1843. He took up land near Goulbourn NSW. A keen ornithologist, he had a number of books published before he left Britain and continued recording Australian bird life after his arrival in Australia. Working in watercolour, pen and ink he depicted the landscape around Sydney and environs.
