Robert Kerr was born in South Africa in 1925. He absconded from school and volunteered to join the S.A.A.F., where he became a lieutenant pilot during World War II. After his discharge he worked in sales, studied to become a surveyor on the gold mines iand became involved in motorsport. In 1960 he moved to Australia where he started from scratch in the motor vehicle business. After six years he moved to Queensland to paint full time. Completely self-taught, he travelled extensively throughout the Australian outback gathering subject matter for his work. He visited opal mines, old gold mines and plenty of old pubs and made friends with all the old characters he encountered. He would then return to his studio and paint all the characters he found on his travels. Robert Kerr was commissioned by mining companies, pastoral companies and also Australia Post for whom he painted most of the Queensland post offices.
