Born in Christchurch, New Zealand in 1852, William Pratt went to England to study in 1876, and returned with a bride in 1879. He farmed in the Nelson area and in the South Island, painting in his spare time. Pratt retired and by 1920 was a member of the Wanganui Arts and Crafts Society.
