Born in Christchurch in 1870, Mary Tripe (nee Richardson) studied at the Canterbury School of Arts under van der Velden and Nerli, and at the Wellington School of Design where she later taught. An original member of Nairn's Art Club, she exhibited in Wellington from 1884. In 1913 she and her husband made the first of many visits to Europe, where she studied in London under Frederick Whiting. Mainly a portrait painter she exhibited at the Royal Academy and Paris Salon. Her work is represented at the National Art Gallery, Wellington and other major New Zealand collections such as the Hocken Library.

We have records of art auction sales by Mary Tripe from 1985 and in total 66 works by the artist have been offered for sale, of which 53 (80%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $9,567 for The Brass Cleaner sold by International Art Centre in March 2003. This year 10 works have been offered for sale. Works by Mary Tripe are held by the Museum Of New Zealand, Christchurch Art Gallery and a further two major public national galleries (see list below).
