Born in Goondiwindi, Queensland in 1955, Debra Dawes was awarded Diploma in Art from Newcastle College of Advanced Education in 1982, studied for Postgraduate Diploma in Painting, Sydney College of the Arts in 1984/85 and Doctor of Creative Arts, University of Wollongong from 1994 to 2000. An abstract painter, she held her initial solo exhibition in Groningen, Holland, and since then has held over 30 solo exhibitions and particpated in a similar number of group exhibitions in Australian capital cities and regional centres. She has been the recipient of five Australia Council Grants between 1990 and 2010 and was Highly Commended in the 2010 Redlands Westpac Art Prize.

The total number of works by Debra Dawes offered for sale by auction since 1993 is 16, of which 11 (69%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $19,520 for Clock Wise sold by Mossgreen Auctions in November 2011. No works have been offered for sale this year, and the last sale we have recorded for the artist was in 2017. Works by Debra Dawes are held by the Art Gallery of Western Australia, Queensland Art Gallery and a further three major public national galleries (see list below).
