Destiny Deacon is an Indigenous Australian artist and photographer known for her provocative and often humorous artworks that challenge stereotypes and representations of Indigenous people. She was born in Maryborough, Victoria in 1957 and is of K'ua K'ua and Erub/Mer Islander heritage. Deacon's work often explores issues of identity, gender, and race, and incorporates a range of media including photography, video, and installation. Her photographs are often staged and feature herself, family members, or friends as the subjects, playing with the conventions of photography and challenging the viewer's expectations. Deacon's art has been exhibited widely in Australia and internationally, including at the National Gallery of Victoria, the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia, and the Venice Biennale. In 2004, she was the recipient of the prestigious Indigenous Arts Fellowship from the Australia Council for the Arts.
