Shirley Keene was born with cerebral palsy, and overcame the considerable odds t to establish herself as a successful artist. She studied at the Girls Central Art School in the 1940s and did life classes with Ivor Hele. She moved to London in 1951 and didn’t return to Adelaide until 1985. In the UK she worked for the British Spastic Society and pioneered campaigns for people with disabilities. Her work is remembered by many for a series of illustrated weekly columns she wrote during the 1950s while living in London, which were published in The Advertiser in Adelaide.
