Born in England in 1898, Goodchild arrived in Adelaide in 1913 and studied at the Central School of Arts & Crafts in London in 1921 and at the South Australian School of Arts from 1941 to 1946. As well as a watercolourist, he became a leader in the field of etching in South Australia. He was a member of the Painter-Etchers Society and the Graphic Art Society in London and was appointed to the Board of the Art Gallery of South Australia, a position he held from 1940 to 1953.
