Born in Victoria in 1928, Hood studied at the Royal Melbourne Technical College before travelling to England and Europe. A painter of still life and interiors, he ceased exhibiting after being appointed assistant curator at the National Gallery of Victoria in 1961. In 1967 he was awarded a Churchill Scholarship. He authored several books on pottery which he collected, and he bequeathed his collection to the McClelland Gallery when he died in 2002.
