Born in Hermannsberg, near Alice Springs in 1916, he attended the Mission school at Hermannsburg and worked on the Mission station. He began painting in 1940 and in 1941 joined Rex Battarbee and Albert Namatjira on a painting trip, travelling on camels. However it wasn't until several years later that he began to paint seriously.
