Henry Gilbert Jones, described as an apothecary with personal means, arrived in Port Phillip in March 1842, having traveled from England via the United States. Besides being a pharmacist, he was also a sketcher and engraver. Upon settling in Eltham, he constructed a log cabin, making him the area's inaugural resident. From 1842 until September 1843, Jones was appointed as the Deputy Protector of natives at Narre Warren. During his stint in Narre Warren, Jones pursued his passion for art as an amateur artist. His dedication paid off in 1846, as some of his etchings of Melbourne were used as decorative note paper headings, which earned him professional status. The Port Phillip Almanack for 1847 listed him as an artist based in Collins St., Melbourne. Later, in 1859, he was recognized as both an artist and engraver at 107 Elizabeth St.
