John Brasell was born in Timaru and has been drawing and painting from his early years. After finishing his secondary education at Timaru Boys’ High School he joined the Bank of New Zealand and continued his interest in art by taking lessons in life drawing from Mrs Ainslie Manson, a master painter. In 1960 he moved to Christchurch to join an advertising agency as a graphic artist. After fourteen years he left advertising to concentrate on easel painting and now specialises in interpreting the New Zealand scene in watercolour.
