Kenneth Nelson was born in 1927 in Dunedin and developed a love of the landscape as a young man when tramping in the mountain areas of the South Island of New Zealand. Over many years his painting style changed from watercolours to the exacting oils using palette knives. The range of subjects included seascapes, bush, mountain and lake scenes and he had a special interest in the high country of Central Otago and the MacKenzie country. His paintings can be found in many collections, both public and private in New Zealand and many other countries. He is a past president of the Otago Art Society and he was an active contributor to the Dunedin art scene during the 1960-1990s. He was a major prize winner in the 1971 Kelleher Art Competition.
