Born in England in 1806, Peacock was a London attorney when, in 1836, he was convicted of forging a signature on a power of attorney and sentenced to transportation for life. Following an unhappy period in Port Macquarie he received a conditional pardon in 1846. He remained in Australia, working as a meterorologist until 1856. During this period and up to the late 1880s he painted in the Sydney area, usually harbour and topographical views, and often painted on copper.
