Born in Poland in 1924, de Teliga arrived in Australia in 1927. After serving in the R.A.A.F. during World War II, he studied at the East Sydney Technical College. He was appointed a tutor in art at the University of Sydney from 1951 until 1954 and then became Keeper at the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery in Hobart from 1954 until 1960. He returned to Sydney in 1960 as Director of the Blaxland Gallery in Pitt Street. From 1966-1974 de Teliga taught painting at the National Art School, Sydney and from 1974-75 was Head of the Art School. He first exhibited his abstract paintings in 1958 and held more than 25 exhibitons throughout his career as well as winning numerous awards.
We have records of art auction sales by Stanley De Teliga from 1971 and in total 73 works by the artist have been offered for sale, of which 62 (85%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $9,205 for Quiet on the Kydra 1973 sold by Leonard Joel in June 2021. No works have been offered for sale this year, and the last sale we have recorded for the artist was in 2023. Works by Stanley De Teliga are held by the Art Gallery of Western Australia, Art Gallery of NSW and National Gallery of Australia.
