Born in England in 1869, Hugh Scott studied in Florence, brussels, Dresden and Paris at the Julian Academy prior to his arrival in New Zealand in 1904. A painter and teacher he was a director of Bishop Suter Art Gallery and established the Nelson School of Painting and also taught at Nelson College. He was a early mentor to Toss Woollaston and Margory Naylor from the Nelson area. He exhibited with the New Zealand Academy of fine Arts in wellington from 1904 to 1920.
